Description

These Basic Oatmeal Cookies are a wholesome and delicious treat made with whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and a perfect balance of sugars. Softened butter and vanilla add rich flavor, while baking soda ensures a light and tender texture. Easy to prepare and perfect for a cozy homemade snack or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 8 tablespoons butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, baking soda, and salt until well mixed to ensure even distribution of leavening and seasoning.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, cream the softened butter using a mixer until it starts forming little peaks. Then add the white and light brown sugars and mix for 3-4 minutes until fully incorporated and fluffy.
  3. Add Egg and Vanilla: Add the large egg to the creamed mixture and mix until just combined, avoiding over-mixing. Next, add the vanilla extract and quickly mix it in thoroughly.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry: Using a silicone spatula or wooden spoon, gently stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a uniform dough forms.
  5. Chill Dough and Prep Oven: Chill the cookie dough in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 360°F (182°C) and line a cookie sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.
  6. Shape Cookies: Remove the dough from the fridge. Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop scoops of dough onto the prepared cookie sheet, spacing them to allow for spreading. Multiple batches may be needed.
  7. Bake Cookies: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cookies begin to lightly brown and become crisp on the edges.
  8. Cool Cookies: Allow the cookies to cool on the cookie sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely, ensuring they set properly.

Notes

  • For a chewier texture, slightly underbake the cookies by reducing baking time by 1-2 minutes.
  • You can add mix-ins such as raisins, chocolate chips, or nuts for extra flavor and texture.
  • Ensure butter is softened but not melted for optimal creaming results.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week or freeze for longer storage.
