Description

Buttery Onion Rice is a comforting and flavorful side dish made by sautéing onions in butter and then simmering rice in broth with aromatic seasonings. This simple recipe yields tender, fluffy rice infused with the rich taste of butter and sweet onions, garnished with fresh parsley for a bright finish.

Ingredients

Scale

Rice and Broth

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth

Vegetables and Flavorings

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch, then drain well.
  2. Melt the butter: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Sauté the onion: Add the chopped onion to the melted butter and sauté until the onion becomes soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Cook the rice with onion: Stir in the rinsed rice, making sure to coat it well with the butter and onion mixture. Cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently to toast the rice slightly.
  5. Add broth and seasonings: Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth. Add the garlic powder, salt, and black pepper, and stir to combine everything evenly.
  6. Simmer the rice: Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed all the liquid.
  7. Steam the rice: Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the rice sit for 5 minutes, keeping it covered to allow the rice to steam and finish cooking gently.
  8. Fluff and garnish: Fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains, then garnish with chopped fresh parsley. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Rinsing the rice removes excess starch and prevents it from becoming sticky.
  • Using chicken broth adds extra flavor, but vegetable broth works well for a vegetarian version.
  • For a richer taste, unsalted butter is recommended so you can control the saltiness.
  • Make sure to cover the pan tightly during simmering to steam the rice properly.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
