Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 12 cups Rice Chex cereal (1 ½ – 15-ounce boxes)
- 7 ounces green vanilla flavored melting wafers
- 7 ounces red vanilla flavored melting wafers
- 6 tablespoons creamy peanut butter (divided)
- 4 tablespoons salted butter (divided)
- 2 cups powdered sugar (divided)
Instructions
- Prepare powdered sugar bag: Add one cup of powdered sugar to a gallon-size Ziplock bag and set aside for later coating the cereal.
- Measure cereal: Place 6 cups of Rice Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- Melt green coating: In a small microwave-safe bowl, combine 7 ounces of green melting wafers, 3 tablespoons peanut butter, and 2 tablespoons butter.
- Microwave melting mixture: Microwave the bowl at 50% power for 30 seconds, then stir the mixture.
- Continue melting: Heat in 15-second increments at the same power, stirring between each, until the mixture is fully melted and smooth. Avoid overheating or adding liquids to prevent seizing.
- Coat cereal with green mixture: Pour or spoon the melted green mixture over the 6 cups of Chex cereal and gently combine with a large spoon or your hands for even coverage.
- Adjust coating if needed: If the cereal is not fully coated, microwave the mixture an additional 15 seconds at 50% power and stir again.
- Dust with powdered sugar: Pour half of the coated Chex mix into the Ziplock bag with powdered sugar. Seal and gently toss to coat the cereal evenly. Repeat with the remaining coated cereal and powdered sugar.
- Spread coated cereal: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the green-coated Puppy Chow evenly to set.
- Repeat for red coating: Repeat Steps 2 through 9 using the other 6 cups of Chex cereal, red melting wafers, remaining peanut butter, butter, and powdered sugar. Use a clean bowl and a second Ziplock bag for the red batch.
- Set and serve: Allow both green and red Puppy Chow batches to set on their baking sheets for about an hour before handling or serving.
Notes
- Be careful not to overheat the melting wafers to prevent them from seizing.
- Using your hands to mix helps achieve even coating on the cereal pieces.
- If the mixture thickens too much, a brief additional microwave session can help loosen it.
- This recipe requires no baking and can be made quickly in the microwave.
- Store Puppy Chow in an airtight container for up to one week for maximum freshness.
