Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry Base
- 1 package Puff Pastry (butter-based for maximum flavor)
- 1 cup Flour (for dusting the surface)
Fillings
- 0.25 lb Black Forest Ham (can substitute with Virginia or smoked ham)
- 0.5 lb Gruyère Cheese (Swiss or cheddar can also be used)
- 1 tbsp Dijon Mustard (optional, for added flavor)
Finishing Touches
- 1 large Egg (beaten, for brushing on top)
Instructions
- Prepare the Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry according to package instructions. Lightly dust a clean surface with flour and roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth any creases and slightly enlarge it for easier cutting.
- Cut and Layer: Cut the puff pastry into squares approximately 3-4 inches wide. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard onto half of the squares if using. Layer slices of Black Forest ham over the mustard, followed by a generous portion of grated or sliced Gruyère cheese. Top each stack with another puff pastry square to create layered stacks.
- Seal and Brush: Press the edges of the stacked puff pastry squares gently to seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative touch and to help keep the filling inside. Brush each stack with the beaten egg to ensure a golden and glossy finish when baked.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the puff pastry stacks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake them in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are puffed up and golden brown.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the stacks from the oven and let them cool slightly on a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature as appetizers or snacks.
Notes
- Using butter-based puff pastry enhances flavor and flakiness.
- Dijon mustard is optional but adds a nice tang that complements the ham and cheese.
- Substitute ham varieties according to preference or dietary restrictions.
- Gruyère cheese melts well and provides a nutty flavor, but Swiss or sharp cheddar are great alternatives.
- Make sure to fully thaw the puff pastry before rolling to prevent tearing.
- These stacks can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
