Description

This French Onion Meatloaf combines the rich, savory flavors of caramelized onions with tender ground beef, enhanced by the depth of Gruyère cheese and classic French seasonings. A comforting and elegant twist on traditional meatloaf, perfect for a hearty family meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meatloaf

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese, divided

Caramelized Onions

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the meatloaf.
  2. Caramelize the onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the thinly sliced onions until they become caramelized and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Deglaze the pan with beef broth and stir until the liquid is absorbed. Set aside to cool.
  3. Mix meatloaf ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, minced garlic, beaten egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until well blended.
  4. Add onions and cheese: Fold the cooled caramelized onions and half of the shredded Gruyère cheese into the meat mixture gently to distribute evenly.
  5. Shape the meatloaf: Form the mixture into a loaf shape and place it into a baking dish suitable for roasting.
  6. Bake the meatloaf: Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour or until the internal temperature measures 160°F (70°C), ensuring it is cooked through.
  7. Add cheese topping: Sprinkle the remaining shredded Gruyère cheese over the top of the meatloaf and return to the oven for an additional 5-10 minutes, until the cheese melts and becomes bubbly.
  8. Rest and serve: Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with your favorite sides and enjoy!

Notes

  • For best results, use freshly shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese for melting.
  • You can substitute beef broth with chicken broth or water if unavailable.
  • Ensure the meatloaf rests before slicing to retain juices and improve texture.
  • Optional: Add chopped fresh parsley or chives as garnish for added freshness.
