Description

This refreshing Grapefruit Orange Sangria is a delightful blend of Riesling wine, fresh citrus fruits, and mint, perfectly balanced with a touch of sweetness from homemade simple syrup. Chilled for a couple of hours and topped with club soda, it’s an ideal cocktail for warm gatherings and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale

Simple Syrup

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water

Sangria

  • 1 bottle Riesling wine (750ml)
  • 12 – 15 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup (prepared from above)
  • 2 ripe grapefruits
  • 2 ripe oranges
  • 2 limes
  • Club soda, for topping

Instructions

  1. Prepare Simple Syrup: Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small pot. Bring to a full boil while stirring to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat and allow the syrup to cool completely.
  2. Prepare the Fruit: Cut the grapefruits, oranges, and limes into chunks or slices that will fit easily into your carafe or pitcher, ensuring they can be removed or served comfortably with the sangria.
  3. Layer Fruit and Mint: In the carafe, add a few pieces of grapefruit, followed by orange segments and several mint leaves. Lightly muddle the mint beforehand to release its flavor.
  4. Continue Layering: Repeat fruit and mint layering until the carafe is approximately half full of mixed fruit pieces and mint leaves.
  5. Add Sweetener and Wine: Pour two tablespoons of the cooled simple syrup over the fruit. Then, add the entire bottle of Riesling, filling the carafe almost to the top while leaving space for stirring.
  6. Chill and Marinate: Refrigerate the sangria for 2 to 3 hours, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir every 30 minutes to enhance infusion. Before serving, taste and add more simple syrup if a sweeter profile is preferred.
  7. Serve: Pour the chilled sangria into individual glasses, top each glass with a splash of club soda for fizz, and garnish with a few fresh mint leaves.

Notes

  • For a less sweet sangria, reduce the amount of simple syrup or omit addition after chilling.
  • Ensure the fruit is ripe and fresh for the best flavor infusion.
  • Adjust the amount of club soda depending on your preference for fizz and dilution.
  • This sangria can be prepared up to 12 hours in advance to deepen citrus flavors.
  • Use a large glass carafe or pitcher to accommodate layering and mixing.
