Ingredients
Scale
Beef Patties
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Sandwich Layers
- 6 slices rye bread
- 6 slices provolone cheese
- 6 slices cheddar cheese
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
Secret Sauce
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons chopped bacon pieces
- 3 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon relish
Instructions
- Prepare Beef Patties: Form the ground beef into 3 flattened patties. Season each patty evenly with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to enhance the flavor.
- Cook Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patties until fully browned and cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Make Secret Sauce: In a bowl, combine mayonnaise, chopped bacon, ketchup, sugar, and relish. Mix well to create the flavorful secret sauce.
- Butter Bread Slices: Spread softened unsalted butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. This will create a golden, crispy crust when grilled.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Place the buttered side down of three of the rye bread slices in the skillet. On each piece, layer 2 slices of provolone cheese, one cooked beef patty, and 2 slices of cheddar cheese. Spread secret sauce on the second slice of bread and place it on top, sauce side down.
- Grill Sandwiches: Cook until the bottom bread is toasted and the cheese begins to melt, then carefully flip each sandwich. Continue toasting the other side until it is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Serve Warm: Remove sandwiches from skillet and serve immediately to enjoy the warm, gooey cheesy goodness paired with the savory secret sauce.
Notes
- Use freshly ground beef for best flavor and texture in patties.
- Adjust seasoning in secret sauce to taste, adding more or less relish or sugar as preferred.
- For crispier sandwiches, press down gently with a spatula as they cook.
- Rye bread is traditional for patty melts but can be substituted with sourdough or white bread if preferred.
- Ensure the skillet is at the right temperature to avoid burning the bread before cheese melts.
- The chopped bacon in the sauce adds a smoky depth but can be omitted or replaced with finely chopped pickles for a vegetarian version.
