Ingredients
Scale
Crust
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup chilled vegan butter or margarine
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- Cold water (quantity as needed to form dough)
Filling
- 4-5 apples, cored and sliced
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Dash of lemon juice (optional)
- Melted vegan butter (for drizzling)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch loose-bottom tart pan to prevent sticking.
- Make the Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour and 3 tablespoons of sugar. Add chilled vegan butter or margarine and mix until the mixture becomes crumbly. Gradually add cold water a little at a time until the dough forms a cohesive ball.
- Roll and Fit Dough: Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to fit your 9-inch tart pan. Press the dough evenly into the pan, ensuring it covers the base and sides completely.
- Prepare Apple Filling: In a separate bowl, toss the sliced apples with the remaining 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, and a dash of lemon juice if using, to enhance flavor and prevent browning.
- Assemble Tart: Pour the apple mixture evenly over the prepared crust. Drizzle melted vegan butter over the top of the apples for added richness.
- Bake: Place the tart in the preheated oven and bake for about 70 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust turns a beautiful golden brown.
Notes
- Use tart or Granny Smith apples for better texture and balance of sweetness and tartness.
- The lemon juice is optional but helps keep apples from discoloring and adds a slight tang.
- Ensure the vegan butter is chilled to create a flakier crust.
- Let the tart cool before slicing to allow the filling to set properly.
- You can substitute gluten-free flour if needed, although texture may vary slightly.
